The cynic in me likes to lament the fact that our current government is running this country straight into the ground. However, occasionally I'm presented with evidence to remind me that it could be much worse. I can't fathom that there could exist a society in which the military openly executes citizens, or that anyone in such a society could possibly consider that an acceptable practice, or respond to it with anything short of a bloody revolution.

What was her crime? How old was she? Did she have children, are they grown, do they know how their mother perished? Who is more complicit in this act: the man holding the rifle, those securing her arms, or the ones in the background standing there doing absolutely nothing at all?

Happy birthday, America. You may be having trouble, but you're still the land of the free.
